254 Stainless Steel Welded Pipe

254 stainless steel welded pipe, commonly known as 254SMO welded pipe, is a type of super austenitic stainless steel welded pipe, corresponding to UNS number S31254 and German grade 1.4547. It belongs to the 6-molybdenum super stainless steel series and is named for its approximately 6% molybdenum content. It is not a duplex steel, but a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel, possessing extremely high resistance to pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking.

Key Characteristics and Applications

1. Corrosion Resistance: PREN value (pitting corrosion equivalent) ≥42.5, significantly higher than 316L (approximately 32), particularly suitable for seawater, high-chloride, and acidic media environments.

2. Mechanical Properties: Tensile strength ≥650MPa, yield strength ≥300MPa, elongation ≥40%.

3. Applicable Temperature: -196℃ to 400℃, excellent performance in medium and low temperature corrosive environments.

4. Typical Applications: Seawater desalination plants, marine engineering, chemical equipment, flue gas desulfurization systems, pulp and paper industry, high-purity pharmaceutical equipment.

Core Differences between 254 Stainless Steel Welded Pipes and 316L Stainless Steel Welded Pipes

1. Molybdenum Content: 254SMO contains 6% vs. 316L contains 2-3%.

2. Corrosion Resistance: 254SMO's pitting corrosion resistance is approximately twice that of 316L.

3. Price: 254SMO is significantly more expensive than 316L. 316L, approximately 3-5 times that amount.
