254 Stainless Steel Coils

Manufacturers of 254 stainless steel coils offer hot-rolled and cold-rolled stainless steel coils in a complete range of specifications. 254S stainless steel coils exhibit significantly higher resistance to chloride ions, seawater salt spray, and strong acid corrosion than 316L, with excellent resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and intergranular corrosion. They also possess good high-temperature stability and excellent mechanical properties, making them suitable for harsh and corrosive environments such as flue gas desulfurization, seawater desalination, high-salt wastewater treatment, and marine chemical industries.

254 stainless steel coils (254SMO) are super austenitic stainless steel, with the national standard grade 00Cr20Ni18Mo6CuN (S31254), commonly known as 6Mo stainless steel. The core components include 19.5-20.5% chromium, 17.5-18.5% nickel, 6.0-6.5% molybdenum, 0.18-0.22% nitrogen, and ≤0.02% carbon. With a PREN value ≥42.5, it exhibits extremely strong resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, approaching the level of nickel-based alloys.

Suitable for extremely corrosive environments: seawater desalination plants, deep-sea oil and gas platforms, seawater treatment systems; sulfuric acid/hydrochloric acid media equipment, flue gas desulfurization systems, heat exchangers in the chemical industry; also suitable for pulp bleaching equipment, pharmaceutical reactors, high-salt wastewater treatment equipment, etc., providing a cost-effective alternative to 316L stainless steel in high-chlorine and strong acid conditions.

High cost-performance ratio, economical

High-end special material, price far exceeding 316L

Why is 254 stainless steel coil relatively expensive?

1. High-cost alloy composition: Contains 6%+ molybdenum, 18%+ nickel, and 20%+ chromium, with added copper and nitrogen. These precious metals account for over 70% of the raw material cost.

2. Complex production process: Requires vacuum induction melting + electroslag remelting, high rolling precision, and significant processing losses, resulting in significantly higher production costs than ordinary stainless steel.

3. Special market positioning: Belongs to super austenitic stainless steel, focusing on extreme corrosion conditions. Low production volume, special supply chain, and significant premium.

254SMO stainless steel coil is indeed expensive, 2-3 times more expensive than 316L and 3-6 times more expensive than 304. However, under extreme corrosion conditions, its ultra-high corrosion resistance (PREN≥42.5) brings long-term economic benefits, making it an irreplaceable high-performance, cost-effective choice.
